A nonet is a nine-line poem. In the nonet form, each line contains specific, descending syllable counts.

The first line contains nine syllables, the second line contains eight, and the third line contains seven, and so on.

I don't remember when we started

coexisting, sharing this grief.

Not all conscious matter cries,

yet, universal pain -

felt between two souls,

births empathy

all living

creatures

know.

I am told, "Give him a gift and go."

All women are taught this lesson

Walk away empty-handed

return to your earth, grieve.

And begin again

from damp soil.

Root and stem,

you will

grow.

What is violence in a household but

every fear of myself unknown?

Another pain to address.

Open floor layout to

unwelcome teachings

at a bargain.

Bad habits

pay the

rent.

Appetite goes away when I can't

escape violence in a household.

Restriction, an attempt to

subsist on nothing more

than I can control.

At least I'm not

a body

full of

shame.

Coffee and donuts with an old flame.

The bitter taste a reminder

of desire, old cravings.

Chemical imbalance.

It's starting to feel

overwhelming.

The sugar

hits my

brain.

The absurdity of existence

The banality of debate

nature observes these troubles

silent and resolute

crown-shy survival

overcoming

the mistakes

humans

make.
